This work is born thanks to a reflection on film genres within contemporary cinema. Although traditional genres such as drama, comedy, action, and horror still exist, they have been expanded and hybridized to create new subgenres and categories.
I wanted to make these aspects explicit in a technical exercise on video editing, re-inventing the storytelling, and therefore twisting the narrative and the genre.
To do this, I used Jean-Pierre Jeunet's 2001 romantic comedy "Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain."
The presumptive trailer aims to deceive the viewer into thinking the film is infact a thriller, and to hopefully wringing a smile from those who, aware, recognize the deception.
The only changes that have been made to the original film are montage and music; dialogue and scenes have remained intact.
By using fragments of truth, one is able to imply something other than its original nature.
With this seemingly innocuous "Fake Trailer" I hope to make the viewer consider how easy it is to manipulate the narrative of an event through communication, especially when it needs to be increasingly quicker like in social media.
